The process for establishment of the Tura Municipal Board started in the year 1974. Prior to the establishment of the Municipal Board, Tura Town was looked after by the Tura Town Committee constituted under Meghalaya Municipal (Garo Hills Autonomous District) Act, 1979 (Act 7 of 1978).
