The process for establishment of the Tura
Municipal Board started in the year 1974.
Prior to the establishment of the Municipal
Board, Tura Town was looked after by the
Tura Town Committee constituted under the
Garo Hills District (Administration of Town
Committee) Act, 1956. The Garo Hills
District Council by its official resolution
dated 28th June, 1974 moved the State
Government for the conversion of the
existing Tura Town Committee into a
municipality to be constituted by the State
Government for the better civic
administration of the town in view of the
growing population and expansion. A
notification No. MUN.67.74/90 dated
08-06-1978 was published in the Gazette of
Meghalaya dated 22.06.1978 under sub-section
(1) of Section 2 of the Meghalaya Municipal
(Garo Hills Autonomous District) Act, 1978
declaring the Government’s intention to
constitute the areas under the Tura Town
defined in the Schedule annexed to the said
notification into a Municipality to be
called the Municipality of Tura.
The Government of Meghalaya after
considering the objections received by it
issued a notification, No. MUN.67/74/130
dated 13th August, 1979 and constituted the
areas under the Tura Town more particularly
defined in the Schedule below into a
Municipality to be called the Municipality
of Tura and applied the provisions of the
Meghalaya Municipal Act and of the Rules to
the said Municipality and the areas
comprising it.
